In my 30+ year career as a Tarot and Soulful Counselor, I commonly hear clients express their angst, their disappointments, and generally feeling adrift in life. Here are some of the concerns I hear…
- I’m lost.
- Not sure which direction to go.
- Everything I do falls apart.
- I keep getting blocked.
- It’s difficult to make a decision.
- I feel like a failure.
- Something’s wrong with me.
- My energy is so low.
Do you ever have these thoughts or feelings? I do, and most of us humans face these questions and concerns at some point or another, if only for a moment. But, when it becomes a fixed pattern, it’s time to take a deeper look.
Contemplating one’s life purpose is a huge, existential question!! Whether working with Tarot cards or supporting a counseling client, I have observed that this question is at the root of most issues. In fact, this question is so essential that I used to teach in-person workshops, “Finding your Soul Purpose and Path in Life”.
When we step into and claim our life purpose, our energy aligns with our direction, we “cut the fat” from relationships and activities that no longer resonate with us, and thus, life feels more alive…on track, empowered, and energized.
Yes, the world is going through significant adjustments which have effected most, if not all, of us in some way or another. Even though it may seem like you are adrift or have no vision for your future, you really are here at this time to be a part of our collective evolution, through your own unique contribution. The key is to recognize your purpose, then align your energy in that direction for your greatest success!

So…how do you find your purpose…where do you begin?
Before we step into finding one’s life-long pathway, I need to preface this with the understanding that some of us are here to “Do”, while others of us are here to “Be” in some way…or a combination of each. So often, we are programmed to believe that we need a goal to accomplish, a task, or develop a career, yet, what gets lost in this perspective is the power of the experience of life itself, the awareness, as well as the energy, that we are here to embody each moment of life.
Doing involves an external action, a role, an activity, and sometimes a product. While Being tends to be an inside focus, a way of walking through life, and subsequently an effect one has on others.
In my “Finding Your Soul Purpose” workshops, I’d start with childhood memories, those stories that stay with you and represent key elements in your development, especially areas where you were fascinated with life in a way uniquely your own…as opposed to being told who you are or what you should be doing. I write a little about this in my weblog, Soul Purpose – “The Call to Adventure”. I followed that weblog with Part II – Fulfilling Your Life Purpose where I shared specific tools, such as creating a “Mind Map” or a “Vision Board”, to focus on your goals for the coming year, as an extension of your purpose.
These exercises are a great way to journal and use your creative skills to draw out your inner knowing.
